The Fillies will celebrate 53 years of work this year in which they have helped the Kentucky Derby Festival Committee by producing a gala Derby Ball. Each year during the ball the Derby Queen is chosen by a spin of the wheel and presented to the public with her court.
The Fillies also publish the official Derby Festival program.
It has progressed from a ball at the Armory to the old Galt House to a dinner dance at the new Galt House with its spectacular ballroom and popular chef Brian Riddle in charge.
The year the theme is “Hats Off To The Fillies” who have worked so hard all these years. They also “do” the Queen’s float in the Derby Parade.
Betty Moberly, president of the Fillies, has chosen Jo Graves, as the ball chairman this year with Lou Ellen Williams as the co-chair. Patsy Allen is in charge of the princesses.
The princesses of the Royal Court are Jhalak Dholakia (UofL), Arielle Evans (Georgetown College), Kaelyn Gault (UofL), Irma Kocer (UofL), Erica Lee (UofL), and Taylor Sang (Western Kentucky University).
The princesses were selected from more than 100 applicants. They will attend nearly 70 events as ambassadors for the 2012 Kentucky Derby Festival. Each will receive a $2,000 scholarship funded by equal donations from the Fillies and the Derby Festival.
A very special guest of the Fillies at the Ball this year will be jockey Pat Day.
The favors this year will blow your socks off! They are without a doubt the best ever given. I won’t tell you what they are but here is a hint. They are made locally, each couple will receive one and trust me, everyone will be thrilled.
Dr. Ted Turns 60!
Looks are deceiving. To look at Ted Steinbock one would think he was pushing 50. Well, he is, but from the wrong way! His mother, Lou, laughed and said they put the wrong date on his birth certificate.
Last weekend Sarah Martin orchestrated a wonderful 60th birthday party for Ted at his home in Glenview.
It was great fun with Cathy, John and Aaron Yarmuth, Greg Fischer, Julius Friedman, Ellie, Terri and Steve Bass, Theresa and Joe Kelly, Mary Ann and Tommy Elliott, Susan Long and Bill Yarmuth, Dawn and Bob Meade, Neville Blakemore, Sally and Cooper Lily, Carol and Dave Armstrong, John Shaw Woo and loads of other fun people.
Blue Apple on Broadway is having its annual frolic of fashionable people on Saturday, March 10 at 7 p.m. at the Brown Theater.

Guest Chef Daniel Orr was at the Brown Hotel last week. The award winning Bloomington chef came in to cook a five-course Caribbean dinner and do a book signing. The dinner showcased traditional Caribbean cuisine from Orr’s cookbook, Paradise Kitchen.
The Caribbean-themed menu started with delicious Callaloo and Black-Eyed Pea Fritters and Mimi-Jerked Pork Burger Sliders accompanied by Island Rum punch with Spice Syrup and lime.
That was followed by conch chowder, a staple of the islands.
The West Indian Slam’n Yam salad was fresh greens with yams, coconut, honey, curry and hot chili.
The main course an Anguillian Paella Platter of crayfish, clams, chicken, chorizo, shrimp, fish fillets, squid, fresh herbs, curry and hot chili.
And for dessert there was cheese cake made with what else but Key Limes, sour cream, cream cheese and flavored with fresh vanilla.
The whole evening was delish from start to finish.
