A prelude to Derby parties

Shiao Woo and John Shaw Woo had a casual evening at their charming home in old Louisville. They are marvelous hosts and even better, marvelous new friends. Shiao came here from MD Anderson Center in Houston to join the University of Louisville as professor and chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology. They are both young and cute and have jumped on the social merry-go-round when not hard at work.

Casual only referred to the attire. The dinner was anything but!

Chef David Scales prepared five courses of a tasting menu for a proposed new restaurant called Method. It started with fried green heirloom tomatoes with crab cakes and paddlefish caviar, went through asparagus soup with a terrine of spring vegetables, and on to divine lamb carpaccio with delicious double-mustard ice cream and arugula, then crispy skinned striped bass with gnocchi in a greens and lemon tarragon emulsion and finished with the ultimate dessert: a Method sampler of chocolate terrine with blueberry shiraz sauce, mini lemon bundt cake with fresh fruit and raspberry sorbet, caramel mouse on twill and maple “dirt.”

Linda Shapera and Bob Taylor, Aaron Yarmuth, Susan Moreman, Karter Louis and R.P Lengyel, who own the popular Hillbilly Tea restaurant on First Street, were among the guests. Three courses were served in the dining room followed by a break in the lovingly renovated backyard with its gardens and swimming pool. Then it was on to the lower level dining room for the other two courses served in the original stone-walled basement room. Interesting and lush wines accompanied each course.

One of the guests, who is shy but plays the piano beautifully, played for a short time on the magnificent German Grotrian grand piano. This is a magnificent instrument and probably the only one in the state.

EASTER BUNNY

You have to go see (and taste) the fabulous chocolate Easter bunnies and eggs at Ghyslain Chocolatier on Market Street. They will guarantee your basket will be the best basket anyone gets Easter morning. Ghyslain chocolates were introduced to the market at the Louisville Deaf Oral School’s Antiques and Fine Living Show in November 2009. Check them out at www.ghyslain.com.

The restaurant is open every day from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and has everything from fine French pastries and paninis to a Norwegian salmon bagel, quiche Lorraine, soups, salads and everything in between including the most divine and beautiful candy.

‘JUMPIN’ JIVE’

A big band dance was held in the Grand Ballroom of The Henry Clay last Sunday evening. A large crowd turned out for cocktails, dinner and dancing to the music of the Jumpin’ Jive Orchestra made up of U of L jazz studies musicians, who are directed by the world famous John La Barbera and Mike Tracy.

A cabaret show starred Louisville’s favorite female vocalist, Sarah Stivers.

Following Sarah, the dance club members showed up and went to town. Most of them were in outfits reminiscent of the ’40s and early ’50s. They are such good dancers, it was a treat to watch them.

Libby and Jim Voyles are just about as good as the youngsters. Hans Sander was no slouch on the dance floor either. Babs Hardy, Roz and Lilly Carothers, Jane and Bob Halliday, Hans Sander, Carolyn and David Neustadt, Sissy Lanier and Ann Stivers were among those who had an absolutely wonderful evening.

The proceeds of the evening benefited the U of L School of Music.

LOCAL DANCE TEAM

Speaking of ballroom dancing, Oliver Kratholm, 11, of Crestwood, and Hannah Purdy, 11, of Pleasure Ridge Park, will be representing the United States in an international dance team match in Blackpool, England.

They have been selected to compete at the Blackpool Junior Dance Festival as one of four preteen couples on the U.S. Juvenile Team.

Jonathon Wilkins, a U.S. team coach and world champion dancer, invited Oliver and Hannah to join the U.S. team after seeing them dance at the Ohio Star Ball in Columbus, Ohio.

They have won the USA Gold Medal and are the USA Champions in International Standard Categories, Amateur Preteen and Amateur Junior!

Oliver is a fifth-grader at Kenwood Station Elementary School in Crestwood, and Hannah is a fifth-grader at Carter Traditional Elementary School in Louisville.

They practice together for six to 10 hours a week with their coaches, Linda Jackson and Charles Jones, at Ballroom East dance studio.

Amateur Ballroom Dance, a local nonprofit, is holding a fundraiser social dance Sunday, April 17, from 5 to 8 p.m. at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 2233 Woodbourne Ave. Admission is a $10 minimum donation. A special demonstration by several ballroom dancers will be at 6 p.m. All proceeds from the event will benefit Oliver and Hannah’s trip to Blackpool.

ST. FRANCIS IN SPAIN

St. Francis School at Goshen has an exchange program with a private school in Madrid, Spain. The Spanish children were here for three weeks in the fall. Now the Goshen kids are in Madrid for three weeks. One of those weeks is spring vacation, so the children are going on holiday with their hosts in various parts of the country.
