Wayne Lucas and Bob Baffert donated a dinner at Jeff Ruby’s to benefit the Kentucky Derby Museum. Brooks Bower, a board member, bought it. So one fine night Derby week Brooks and his wife, Marilyn, and his mother, Poopsie Tuck, of San Francisco had dinner with the famous trainers. I am lucky enough to be a friend of Poopsie, and I was her date for the evening.

It was like having dinner with rock stars. You cannot imagine the number of young girls who came up to the table. It was a fun, fascinating evening. A night to remember.


The second annual “A Salute to Women, Wine and Whiskey” Dinner will be held on June 17 at The Brown Hotel. Their executive chef Laurent Geroli is hosting this event for the second time.

The women are chef Julie Francis of Nectar in Cincinnati, chef Kathy Cary of Lilly’s, chef Meg Galus of The Sofitel Hotel in Chicago, chef Ouita Michel of Holly Hill Inn in Midway, chef Regina Mehallick of R Bistro in Indianapolis, Sus Maurais of Ghyslain in Union City, Ind., Susie Selby of Selby Winery in Sonoma and Victoria MacRae-Samuels of Maker’s Mark.

Wine expert David DuBois, of Vintner Select, will be available to discuss the wine pairings. Guests will enjoy hors d’oeuvres prepared by Sullivan University students, chef faculty member Katie Payne and Juleps catering as well as scrumptious cheeses from Capriole Farms.


The Louisville Science Center is exhibiting “Hats! Reflections in Time” through Sept. 30. The hats will be displayed in the Science Center’s Discovery Gallery. They date from the late 19th century through the 1980s.

Thanks to Jo Ross and Jean Frazier, the exhibit will be up throughout the summer. Jo was instrumental in getting Gabriel Amar of Frank Olive Hat to use his expertise to restore the hats.


The Summit has announced it 2011 Music on the Terrace Summer Concert Series. It starts June 2 with Nervous Energy. The series will be every Thursday evening in June and July on the terrace between the patios of Mitchell’s Fish Market and Martini Italian Bistro from 6:30 to 8 p.m. There will also be games and prizes.

While at the concert, you can dine alfresco at restaurants like Martini’s, Mitchell’s, Qdoba Mexican Grill, Starbucks and 32 Degrees.
