When attorney Anastasia Weis-Cullen moved from Chicago back to her hometown of Louisville, she also made a career move from the bar – to the kitchen.
Having three children, two with severe nut allergies, Weis-Cullen was used to adapting her baking to her children’s dietary needs – putting her in front of the oven regularly.
Like many classroom parents, Weis-Cullen searched for ways to bring delicious snacks to school without triggering allergies. An after-school hobby soon turned into a full-time job and voila, a bakery was born.
Upon returning to Louisville, Weis-Cullen enrolled in school at Sullivan University (where she is currently completing her professional baker’s diploma), opened Ooh La La! Bakery and has been making waves as the only tree and peanut-free bakery in Louisville.
Upon arriving at the bakery, I gained twice my weight just smelling the delicious baked goods, and it soon became apparent that these aren’t your everyday recipes. Anastasia told me about her passion for baking while stuffing a to-go bag for me and pulling a batch of banana bread out of the oven. You could tell she’s a mom, her multi-tasking skills were too good for an ordinary slice and baker.
Opened in November of 2009, Ooh La La! started out as wholesale/made-to-order bakery, and today, serves up decadent desserts at a retail location off Plantisde Drive with plans to expand into an additional retail spot in the East End.
Cupcakes, cookies, brownies and more are all made using only fresh, locally-grown and organic ingredients free of artificial preservatives and additives wherever possible.
“We really do focus on using as many local products and promoting as many local producers as possible, which is a movement I believe Louisville is very supportive of,” Weis-Cullen said.
“We carry Rooibee Red Tea, Java Brewing Co. coffee, and Elmwood Inn Tea, and we promote them as much as we can,” she said. “We also use only fresh ingredients and do everything by hand, which for the foodie town I believe Louisville is – is something Louisville residents are looking for and appreciate.”
Not only are her products all nut-free, but they are prepared in a nut-free environment. Weis-Cullen recognizes the importance of a completely nut-free facility and makes all products in a dedicated commercial kitchen and does not allow any outside products into the bakery.
As an extra step of precaution, Ooh La La! has certified with all suppliers that the products they are using are nut-free and have followed strict FDA guidelines ensuring the products are free of any cross contamination.
These complex and cautious goods are every bit as delicious as they are appealing to the eyes – the whole five minutes prior the them being devoured.
“Our facility is sesame and coconut free and we can accommodate milk, egg and gluten allergies. Our products give everyone the opportunity to enjoy desserts, breads and other treats,” Weis-Cullen said.
With double chocolate brownie topped with a layer of ganache, double-decker chocolate chip cookies, Weis-Cullen is proving you don’t have to lose flavor because you’re losing nuts.

While Ooh La La! is a nut-free bakery, it is also in the process of becoming kosher certified.
