Fritz’s Salon & Spa for Men

Fritz's Salon & Spa for Men.By Josh Keown
Special to the Voice-Tribune

I spent last week in Las Vegas and averaged about two hours of sleep per night. So when I returned and was asked to do some “research” on Brownsboro Road-based Fritz’s Salon & Spa for Men, I accepted without an ounce of arm-twisting.

Guests are greeted in a casual reception area that I would be happy to call my living room: a couple of flat screen TVs tuned to ESPN, comfortable brown leather armchairs and a tray of Otis Spunkmeyer cookies (including my favorite, the white chocolate macadamia nut). I was most definitely in my element, despite some trepidation about being “manscaped.”

I was greeted by Fritz’s owner, Cindy Cameron, who bought the company in 2004 when it only had one location on Hurstbourne Parkway. Five years later, Cindy expanded her business with a second location in the Brownsboro Road area.

Fritz's Keri Sumner giving Josh a therapeutic massage.

My first “man spa” experience put me in the kind hands of Keri Sumner, a massage therapist and skin care professional, who was to administer my first-ever body hair removal treatment to my back. Said treatment was chosen, of course, because it looked like so much fun when actor Steve Carell had it done in “The 40-Year-Old Virgin.” With the full intention of screaming “KELLY CLARKSON!” (as Carell did) at the first sign of discomfort, I found the treatment involved minimal pain and was a small price to pay to avoid hearing hairy back jokes from my girlfriend.

Following the waxing, I was treated to an amazing 30-minute therapeutic massage, which was much needed after a week of planes, trains and automobiles. I quickly learned Keri is a master at finding those stress knots and making them disappear.

Dana trimmed my cuticles, shaped my nails and buffed them to a high shine. I typically don’t pay that much attention to the condition of my hands, but after my first manicure, I am a believer – not to mention watching a monster truck rally on TV made that invigorating salt scrub, well, all the more enjoyable.

It had only been a week since my last haircut, so I received the “Tighten The Edges” service, which they offer free in between haircuts. It consists of a straight razor neck shave and a trim around the ears and on the eyebrows. I loved this service for the pure fact that my neck hair grows faster than our national debt.

My last stop included a wash, scalp massage and a hot towel treatment. The combination of all three of these almost made up for the lack of sleep I got in Las Vegas.

As my spa day at Fritz’s came to a close, I wondered why I had never treated myself to this kind of service before. After all, it’s not “manscaping,” it’s simply a chance to step back and enjoy life and perhaps a revitalizing foot treatment.
