Dining out for life
Throughout the U.S. and Canada, more than 55 cities have chosen a special day dedicated to dining out in support of both local restaurants and the fight against AIDS.
Officially, that day is the last Thursday in April, but in Louisville during that time, there’s a certain event hanging over our heads called The Kentucky Derby.
So, instead of waiting until April to celebrate the national fundraiser, a group of 51 local eateries are coming together on Wednesday, Nov. 30, for the annual event known as Dining Out for Life.
This year, more than 3,500 North American restaurants will donate a portion of gross receipts from Dining Out for Life to a licensed agency in their city.
In Louisville, the chosen beneficiary is House of Ruth – a nonprofit community-based organization that cares for families and individuals with or affected by HIV or AIDS.
With the large group of Louisville restaurants donating 25 percent or more of the night’s proceeds to House of Ruth, Dining Out for Life will significantly contribute to the funding of the organization, which provides case management, housing assistance, advocacy and support for the physical, emotional and psychological needs of individuals with HIV or AIDS.
“So many volunteers are playing an active role,” said Cindy Good, development director for House of Ruth. “We have had such ongoing support from some restaurants for the last 15 years. We promote only locally-owned restaurants. We also got Charlie Strong to do our PSA this year. We’re expecting a record year.”
This year, Louisville’s Dining Out for Life is broadening its scope of restaurants involved, with diners located as far as the West and South end of Louisville and LaGrange.
Additionally, each person who dines in one of the 51 restaurants on November 30 will automatically be entered for a chance to win a trip for two to Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort with two round-trip tickets from Southwest Airlines.
“In the past, Dining Out for Life has probably raised 75 percent of our operating budget from fundraising sources other than grants,” Good said. “It’s by far our most significant fundraiser. We just encourage people to dine out and make a difference.”
