March birthday madness
A surprise party is fun to plan, but can be a bear to pull off successfully. Friends and family of Bryant Nohalty caught him by complete surprise with a 50th birthday celebration at Asiatique on March 26.
Maria Lockard planned the surprise party, inviting more than 200 guests through Facebook and e-mail so she wouldn’t alert Bryant to the plans.
“We were lucky that Bryant is not a Facebook user, so he had no idea of the elaborate communications going on,” she said.
Maria and Bryant, who have known each other since high school and touched base many times as college students at the University of Louisville (she was a Ladybird), began a new chapter in their lives as a couple last year. The guest list was a fun compilation of the couple’s friends, old and new. Bryant’s older brother, Barry, flew in from Chicago, where he is vice president of Citi Company.
The group enjoyed Bryant’s favorite appetizers and cocktails from the Asiatique menu, including beef kabobs, spring rolls, calamari and of course, the With Love, Maria martini, which is rumored to be named after Maria by chef and owner, Peng Looi.
Everyone toasted the birthday boy with champagne and a delicious cake from Plehn’s Bakery, designed in U of L colors and topped with 50 candles. Happy birthday, Bryant!

Who’s the only fashion designer who ends her shows with a signature cartwheel? That’d be Betsey Johnson. The 68-year-old style icon took dance classes as a child, which inspired her love of costumes and over-the-top embellishments.
