One of my fondest childhood memories is of helping my mother and grandmother assemble a basket of goodies and delivering it to our new neighbors who had just moved in across the street. My grandmother would say we were members of something called the “Welcome Wagon,” and this was the proper way to welcome newcomers and a great way to build our community.
If you thought welcoming others was a dying art form, then here’s a bit of good news. The Derby City Newcomers and Neighbors Club Inc., formed in 2010, has reinvigorated this honorable tradition by combining the efforts of the local Welcome Wagon and The Newcomer’s Club of Louisville, which have both been around since the 1950s. The new club attracts a vibrant membership by offering club activities that provide ample opportunities for members to get to know the community and each other.
The Hats Off to Derby fashion show and luncheon is one of the many club events that allows ladies, new to the area, to meet and greet in a stylish and fun atmosphere. The luncheon was held at Lake Forest Country Club and a sold-out crowd enjoyed a delicious Kentucky-inspired lunch while viewing the latest Derby styles in dresses and hats from Stein Mart of Louisville.
