“Stem cells may stave off transplant rejection”, “U of L researcher may hold key for a cure for sickle cell disease”, “Stem cells hold promise in treating retinal degeneration”, these are some of the headlines generated by research funded and supported primarily through the National Stem Cell Foundation, which was established in 2005 to provide major support to a partnership between University of Louisville’s Institute for Cellular Therapeutics and Duke and Northwestern universities.

A few weeks ago during a Leadership Louisville seminar, I attended a breakout session given by Scott Martin, director of 21st Century Parks. Martin, who was recruited by 21st Century Parks in 2010, has 14 years of public parks experience, most recently as operations director of the parks and recreational waterway system of Franklin County, Va.
Celebrating a ‘Derby baby’
It was Derby Day 13 years ago when Brette Baughman, daughter of Amy Baughman, was born. Amy distinctly remembers Real Quiet winning the Derby that day, May 2, 1998, and Brette has always been known as a “Derby baby.”
