Lisa Lake-Roedemeier loves horse racing. She always has. “It’s my passion,” Lisa said. It’s also the inspiration for Madam Foo Foo Couture, a hat design company she co-owns with Judy Steers and Carol Waller.
The real Madam Foo Foo is a gorgeous filly who was owned by Media Thoroughbred Group’s only all-female horse racing partnership, of which Lisa is president. The four-legged Southern Belle now resides in Mississippi and is enjoying a happy retirement. Thanks to a percentage of proceeds from the high-fashion headwear company, other horses are too.
“Madam Foo Foo is living the high life,” said Lisa, “and now we are on our fifth retiree.”
The Breeders’ Cup returns to Churchill Downs next week and for the second year in a row, fashion will take center stage – after the world-class horse racing of course. “It’s like having 12 Derbys in one day,” Lisa said. So why not encourage attendees to dress for it, as we do every year on that first Saturday in May?
“You have to reframe the thinking (about Breeders’ Cup),” she said. “It adds another element (to the races) and might make it more interesting” to those who want to attend for the overall experience and not just the equines.
The international event is so fabulous and located in our own backyard, Lisa pointed out. “I’d just like to see Louisville get more involved.”
