My favorite thing this week in the most ironic way imaginable is that The United States Congress voted that frozen pizza is now a vegetable.
Our government is so stupid and in the pockets of big corporations that they were swayed to vote for a bill in which frozen pizza is considered a vegetable. This bill keeps the USDA from having to include more fresh fruits and vegetables in this nation’s public school meals. This coming at a time when childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years. Actually, let’s go through a few facts straight from the CDC’s website.
- Obese youth are more likely to have risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure. In a population-based sample of 5- to 17-year-olds, 70% of obese youth had at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
- Children and adolescents who are obese are at greater risk for bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, and social and psychological problems such as stigmatization and poor self-esteem.
- Children and adolescents who are obese are likely to be obese as adults and are therefore more at risk for adult health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, several types of cancer, and osteoarthritis.6 One study showed that children who became obese as early as age 2 were more likely to be obese as adults.
- Overweight and obesity are associated with increased risk for many types of cancer, including cancer of the breast, colon, endometrium, esophagus, kidney, pancreas, gall bladder, thyroid, ovary, cervix, and prostate, as well as multiple myeloma and Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
I called the government stupid. They’re not stupid. They just don’t care. They don’t care about you and the definitely don’t care about your children. They care about getting paychecks from ConAgra and Schwan, who makes these new vegetables.
Remember when Sarah Palin said this about the First Lady’s anti-obesity push last year? “What she is telling us is she cannot trust parents to make decisions for their own children, for their own families in what we should eat. … Just leave us alone, get off our back.”
People like the half-term Governor are so terrified of the government controlling them that they don’t even care if the same people turn around and betray their own children.
This reminds me of last season’s Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution. Where the one time “Naked Chef” went to Los Angeles to try to improve the Los Angeles Unified School District’s meal plan. Oliver went in with hope and a plan that could make the L.A.U.S.D.’s lunches not just better than what they were but actually healthy, for just additional pennies on the dollar. Instead he hit road blocks at every turn and was locked out of the schools, with threats of being arrested if he stepped foot on school property.
But this is nothing new. Our Congress and Senate have been voting against our well beings for years now. Whether it be giving the go ahead on drilling off the coast with little regulations, trying to do away with the E.P.A., cutting the F.D.A.’s budget, or trying to privatize Social Security.
So since they don’t care, parents, how about you give little Timmy a paper bag lunch with a sandwich, pretzels and apple in it and stop trusting these large corporations to fatten up your children? It really doesn’t cost anymore than you’re spending on the cheeseburger with a side of pizza and french fries.
I’ll leave you with a page from comedian Adam Carolla’s book “In Fifty Years We’ll All Be Chicks” on the topic of feeding your kids and avoiding crappy school lunches. (above)
This concludes my rant for this week. Happier posts coming soon!
