Til Two Years Do Us Part

| October 4, 2011

What ever happened to ‘til death do us part?

According to a Mexico City proposal, “two years” should substitute “death” in the traditional wedding vows.

As one of the topics of discussion on this morning’s “Today Show,” a vote on the controversial Mexico City proposal to allow couples to sign a short-term marriage contract could happen by the end of this year.

The legislation would allow couples to choose a minimum term of two years of marriage and avoid the stress of divorce by selecting an early time of departure.

Should the couple decide they want to stay together after two years, they simply renew their contract.

On the other hand, should the two decide to go their separate ways, the marriage license ends and the division of property and children is already taken care of through provisions in the proposal.

The leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution, suggests that the initiative would be appropriate for a city where divorce rates are increasing (around half of  Mexico City marriages end in divorce, and typically within the first two years).

But why even get married if you foresee a desire to take an early exit? In the end, isn’t Mexico City just allowing couples to try out marriage without the fear of commitment and completely redefining the significance that marriage once held?

Two years is a short amount of time to know for sure if a marriage is going to work. Besides, aren’t the first few years of marriage usually the toughest for a couple? How can anyone truly assess if they should stay together in such a short time span?

Dating for two years instead is always an option.

Mexico City thinks they’re onto something, and maybe they are. But are they helping or hurting the sanctity of marriage and willingness of couples to commit to one another?

I’m not going to tell you what I think, though I do have an opinion on it. Instead, I’ll let you decide on whether this is a good idea.
