Clifford Hopkins, Marine Corps Lance Corporal, Co-Owner of Royal Muffler Shop

Clifford Hopkins, born on January 19, 1954, in Detroit, Michigan, died on Derby Day, May 4, 2013, of natural causes. He moved to Jeffersontown, Kentucky when he was 3 1/2. He graduated from Jeffersontown High School where he twice won the State Heavyweight Wrestling
Championship.

Clifford was an Eagle Scout and a proud Lance Corporal in the Marine Corps. He loved cars and was Co-Owner of Royal Muffler Shop with his partner, Bob Rucker for 18 years. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and loved attending the Indianapolis 500.

Preceding him in death was his father, Martin Hopkins and his brother-in-law, Jim Rose. Survivors are: Mother, Bernice Hopkins, sister, Claudia Crawford, former wife, Elizabeth Jordan and many aunts, uncles, cousins,
and friends.

A memorial service officiated by Rev. Tom Dillard will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, 2013, at the Korean Saehan Presbyterian Church (formerly the Jeffersontown Presbyterian Church), 10409 Taylorsville Road. He will receive a full military funeral. Memorial contributions, in his honor, may be made to the American Legion, G.I. Joe Post #244, 3408 College Drive, Louisville, Kentucky 40299.

Marie J. Boyd, 93, Devout Catholic, Member Of Milestone Fitness

Marie J. Boyd, 93, died June 11, 2013 at Baptist Hospital East.

She was a devout Catholic, and a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She was an active member of Milestone Fitness and enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family and friends. She was one of a kind and will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Christopher Boyd and her daughter, Elizabeth Boyd Jeffery.

She is survived by her son, John Boyd (Katherine); grandchildren, Peggy Ann Fairleigh, Jeannie Jeffery, John Boyd II (Isabella), Katherine McKay (Kye), Amanda Jeffery Tekin (Onor), Maggie Williamson (Tommy), Jenny Scott (Johnny); great-grandchildren, John Boyd III, Isaac Boyd, Henry Tyler Fairleigh III, Peter Christopher Boyd, Cindy Boyd, Isabelle Tekin, Katherine Rose McKay and Tissy McKay.

Her funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, June 22, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 3345 Lexington Road, with burial to follow in Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation: 4-8 p.m. Friday, June 21, and 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 22, at Pearson’s, 149 Breckenridge Lane.

Dr. Gerald Berman, 79, Ophthalmologist, Army Veteran

Dr. Gerald Berman, 79, died Saturday, June 15, 2013.

He was a native of Bronx, NY, a class valedictorian of his junior and high school classes and a graduate of New York University. He attended medical school at University of Louisville, achieving top honors in his medical class and completed his residency at Philadelphia General and Temple University and was a US Army veteran (Cpt.) of the Vietnam War.

He began his practice of ophthalmology in 1967-1968 and was member of numerous organizations including, AOA Medical Society, past president of Kentucky Chapter of Ophthalmology Society, American Medical Association, Kentucky Medical Society, Louisville Medical Society and The Temple. He enjoyed building model airplanes, belonging to a local group of model builders, he loved to travel and especially loved going to his cabin in North Carolina and was an longtime, avid UofL fan.

He is survived by his wife, Benita Berman; his son, Greg Berman (Ellyn); his daughter, Cara Berman (Michael Jacobson) of Seattle, WA; his brother, Stanley Berman (Cynthia Garrett) of Briarcliff Manor, NY; and his grandchildren, Amanda, Sam and Zach Berman and Dylan Jacobson.

Funeral services were 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, at The Temple, 5101 US Hwy 42, with burial following in The Temple Cemetery. Visitation was after 1:30 p.m. Herman Meyer & Son is in charge of arrangements.

Mildred A. Cox, 89, Member Of St. Raphael Church

Mildred A. Cox, 89, of Louisville, passed away Saturday, June 15, 2013.

She was a member of St. Raphael Catholic Church. During World War II, Mildred, along with her friends, entertained troops through the U.S.O. at Fort Knox.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Florence Higgins Cox.

She is survived by cousins, Kathleen Guinee McGuffin (Rocco), Karen Peterman, Michael, Anthony and Patrick McGuffin, Mary Jean Young, Janet Sanders, Kathy, Gail and Glenn Tonnessen and her dearest friends who
cared for her.

A private burial will take place in Calvary Cemetery.

Hazel Payton Fryrear, 91, Native Of Ohio County, University Of Louisville Graduate

Hazel Payton Fryrear, 91, of Louisville died peacefully Saturday June 15, 2013.

She was a native of Ohio County, Ky., a member of the Louisville Girls High Alumni, U of L Alumni, Order of Eastern Star, Daughters of the American Revolution, Epiphany United Methodist Church, and a proud graduate of the University of Louisville at the age of 69.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin B. Fryrear; and grandsons, Stephen Fryrear Jr. and
Andrew Fryrear.

She is survived by her sons, Stephen Fryrear (Shari) and Jeffrey Fryrear (Candalyn); a brother, Richard Payton (Jennette); grandchildren, Jennifer Kyser and Jessica Kastan; and five great-grandchildren.

A service to celebrate Hazel’s life was held noon Wednesday, June 19, in the Southern Chapel of Arch L. Heady & Son, 3601 Taylor Blvd. Interment was in Louisville Memorial Gardens West. Visitation was 2-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 18.

Gerald A. Goodman, 94, Army Veteran, Retired From Louisville Cement Co.

Gerald A. Goodman, 94, died Sunday, June 16, 2013 at Kindred health Care in Sellersburg.

He was retired from the old Louisville Cement Co., a World War II Army veteran, a member of the American Legion post 204 in Sellersburg, and a member of the Memphis Community Church.

Gerald was preceded in death by his son Allen Goldman.

Survivors include wife, Goldie Goldman; son, Jerry D. (Deborah) Goldman; grandson, Sean A. (Crystal) Goldman; and grandchildren, Haily, Ashley and
Drake Goldman.

Karen Ann Matta, 57, Attendance Clerk At Fern Creek Elementary

Karen Ann Matta, 57, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, colleague, and friend died peacefully with family by her side on June 12, 2013.

She is survived by her husband of 33 years Robert Melvin Matta; her daughters, Angela Duvall and Laura Matta; her sons, Christopher, Joshua and Timothy Matta; eight grandchildren; five sisters; and three brothers.

She was well known as an attendance clerk at Fern Creek Elementary School. Her bright smile, loving spirit, and optimistic attitude were a blessing to everyone she encountered. She will be dearly missed.

A memorial Mass in her honor will be held at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 7500 Tangelo Drive, Louisville, Ky., 40228, on June 22, 2013 at 11 a.m. with a celebration of life reception to follow.

Annie Louise Schott, 98, Proprietor Of Ann’s Variety Store, Avid Gardener

Annie Louise Schott, 98, of Louisville, died peacefully with family by her side on June 13, 2013.

Annie was the proprietor of Ann’s Variety Store and a homemaker. She was an avid gardener who enjoyed sewing and other needlework.

Annie was preceded in death by her loving husband, Charles.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Bill Epperson; her son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Sandra Schott; granddaughters, Denise Epperson, M.D., Tracy Fischer, M.D. (John) and Elizabeth Schott, J.D.; great-granddaughters, Greer and Grace Fischer; sisters, Rosemary and Mabel; and numerous nieces
and nephews.

A Celebration of Life service was 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at the Arch L. Heady at Resthaven Chapel, 4400 Bardstown Road, with interment in Resthaven Memorial Park. A visitation was 2-8 p.m. Monday, June 17, at the funeral home.

Phyllis Elaine Garrett Sherrard, 74, of Louisville passed away Saturday, June 15, 2013.

Phyllis was a member of the Expressway Church of Christ. She was the former owner of It’s Breaktime Restaurant and was said to be the best cook in the world.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Larry Dale “Red Dog” Sherrard; a daughter, Pamela J. Buckley; her parents, Jess and Bessie Garrett; three brothers and four sisters.

Survivors include her children, Raymond T. Bronger (Melissa), Paul A. Bronger (Ruth), Brian Garrett (Donna), Debra E. Barringer, Cynthia L. Bosemer (Shane) and Sheri M. Insley (Bobby); a sister, Jean Carter; a brother, Calvin Garrett; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a companion, Rock Ansert; and her dog Annie. She had a special love for animals.

James “Dickie” Tuttle, 78, passed away on June 15, 2013.

He was a retired owner of Safeway Carpet and a member of 18th Street Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years and the mother of his children, Annie Joyce Tuttle; his son, Darrell Tuttle; and his parents Marvin and Chloe Tuttle.

Survivors include his wife, Janie Harrison; his sons, Kirk “Marty” Tuttle (Becky) and James “Jamie” Tuttle (Susan); grandchildren, Zachary Tuttle (Ashley), Sarah Tuttle and Kayla Tuttle; one great-granddaughter, Hadley, who is on the way; his brothers, Wayne Tuttle and Charles Ray Tuttle (Thelma); and sisters, Beatrice Grizzle, Virginia Parkey, Frances Ramsey (Chuck), Wilma Price (Wilton) and Pat Hall (Ron).

Gary Patrick “Pat” Warner, 66, Retired From Ford Kentucky Truck Plant, Kentucky Colonel

Gary Patrick “Pat” Warner, 66, of Louisville, went to his Heavenly Home, June 14, 2013.

He was a member of Okolona Christian Church. He retired from the Ford Kentucky Truck Plant after 37 years as a UAW Bargainer. He was also a Kentucky Colonel and a member of the Jefferson Gun Club.

Pat was preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Lula Warner.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Suellen (Gies) Warner; children, Jeff Warner (Crystal) and Jill Ford (Jimmy); step-daughter, Brandi Randle (Daniel); grandchildren, Rachel, Spencer, Ryan, Olivia, Sydney and Calvin; brothers, Denny (Vivian), Larry (Barbara), Sam (Sue) and Del (Debbie) Warner; sisters, Brenda Miller (Jimmy), Marsha Cahill and Sandy Berry (Steve) and many nieces
and nephews.

His service was 10 a.m. Monday, June 17, at Okolona Christian Church, 10801 Faithful Way, with burial in Resthaven Cemetery. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Owen Funeral Home, 5317 Dixie Highway.

Yvonne Carter Wilson, 79, Controller And Treasurer for Martin L. Adams & Son For 20 Years

Yvonne Carter Wilson, 79, of St. Petersburg, Fla., passed away June 15, 2013.

She was born August 20, 1933 in Neafus, Ky., to Rosson and Geneva Carter. She came to St. Petersburg in 1997 from Louisville, where she had been the controller and treasurer for Martin L. Adams & Son for 20 years. She was a member of the Island Chapel in St. Petersburg and had been a member of Cooper Memorial Methodist Church in Louisville.

He husband, Blemmer Wilson, precedes Yvonne in death.

She is survived by her brother, Roy Carter (Brenda), Smithfield, KY; her niece, Tina Chick, Jacksonville, FL; nephew, Todd Carter, Springfield; her lifelong friends, Charlotte Elise Wright, Crestwood, KY and Scott Skinner, Ft. Myers, FL; and several other nieces
and nephews.

Friends were received at 9 a.m. Wednesday, June 19, at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, with funeral service at 11 a.m. She will be buried in the Neafus Cemetery, Caneyville, Ky., with her
husband, Blemmer.

Tom Jurich didn’t waste any time in appointing a successor to Julie Hermann, who left the University of Louisville to become director of athletics at Rutgers.

Jurich announced the promotion of Christine Krellwitz to senior women’s administrator.

Krellwitz lettered in track at UofL from 2004-08.

She has been assistant director of development for the Cardinal Athletic Fund.

The Art of Dreams project pairs prominent artists with children from The Dream Factory, a non-profit organization that grants dreams of chronically and critically ill children. Together, each artist and child will spend the summer producing a work of art that will be auctioned in the fall, with proceeds going toward The Dream Factory.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Man and Woman of the Year campaign is a national ten-week campaign to raise funds to help find cures for blood cancers. The campaign includes individuals in the community who agree to utilize their leadership abilities and resources to conduct their own fundraising campaigns to help the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society fund blood cancer research and provide education and support services for patients and their families.

Candidates are judged solely on their success in raising money, each dollar counting as one vote. Their totals are then considered for the national title.

Girl Scouting teaches girls a lot of valuable life skills. Those skills helped one young Girl Scout from southern Indiana act bravely in a scary situation when her nurse and caregiver faced a potentially life-threatening medical crisis.

Jenica Miller, a 5th grader and Junior Level Girl Scout from Floyds Knobs, Ind., has Type II Spinal Muscular Atrophy and uses a power wheelchair for mobility. She is dependent on adults to care for her as her ability to lift and reach is severely limited. Jenica has a nurse who cares for her each day from the time her mother leaves for work until she gets on the school bus.

On a Wednesday morning last September, Jenica’s nurse suddenly became dangerously dizzy as she and Jenica ate breakfast. Even after taking initial steps to check her blood sugar and blood pressure, the nurse knew she could not properly care for Jenica and called for help.

While waiting for help to arrive, Jenica knew she had to get the door unlocked. It was hard as she had to drive herself to the front door, and turn the deadbolt. This required reaching up in the air, an extremely task for her. She also had to turn around to get back to the kitchen, unsupervised near an open staircase.

Jenica, who has been a member of Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana (GSK) since 2009, is at high risk of falling because of her condition. If she falls over, even from a sitting position, she is stuck until an adult can put her upright. Had she fallen or gotten stuck while working on the lock or returning to the kitchen with her nurse, there would have been no one to physically assist her.

While waiting for help, Jenica used a first aid tip she learned from Girl Scouting. She asked her nurse questions to help her stay awake and alert: What did you do this weekend? What did you eat for dinner last night? How is your dog doing?

Jenica checked to see where her nurse’s cell phone was in case she needed to call 911. She kept calm, and kept both herself and the nurse safe until help soon arrived. A substitute nurse took over the care of Jenica until it was time for her to get on her school bus.

Per the Girl Scout Promise, Law, and motto Girl Scouts are expected to be resourceful, skilled, and competent—to have presence of mind and to be of service to others. For this reason, the national Girl Scout Medal of Honor is reserved for those Girl Scouts who have performed heroic acts beyond the degree of maturity and training to be expected at their age.

This recognition may be given to any registered Girl Scout, age 5-17, when evidence proves a compelling case that she saved or attempted to save a life under circumstances that indicate heroism or risk of her own life.

Because of Jenica’s courage and how she took charge in the face of such considerable personal and physical challenges, she was nominated for a national Girl Scout Lifesaving Award, the Medal of Honor. Chances for Jenica to be approved for a medal were slim—fewer than 30 are typically given out per year nationwide across Girl Scouting’s 109 councils—yet local staff and volunteers were convinced she warranted a nomination.

Terri Tock, a GSK program specialist, took the lead to submit Jenica’s nomination to Girl Scouts USA. Tock, along with others across the GSK council were thrilled to hear that Jenica’s nomination was approved. “This is the first I’ve seen a girl be awarded a Medal of Honor in my 30 years of Girl Scouting,” says Tock. “It’s truly an exciting and incredible thing.”

Jenica’s Medal of Honor was presented to her Monday, June 10 during a special ceremony and reception at Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana, 2115 Lexington Road. Lora Tucker, CEO of the Kentuckiana Council, spoke. Jenica requested her medal be presented by her minister.
