Royal Round Up

Today’s Dressed Behavior is all about Kate Middleton as she dazzled at The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Kate accompanied the royal family as they celebrated the Queen — in her most chic enembles to date.

Kate first stopped traffic on the Thames in a scarlet, custom McQueen. She opted for a muted, lace sheath at the service of Thanksgiving at St. Paul’s Cathedral. Both frocks were accessorized with perfectly coordinating hats and clutches. And how would Kate be without her signature LK Bennett, nude pumps. I don’t know – I think we need to get the princess in a pair of ”Red Bottoms!” On second thought, I kind of like the idea that she remains COMPLETELY classic.

Dressed Behavior at The Julep

So, the recovery of Derby weekend has finally occurred. I know you’ve heard a few tales of the time, but here’s how my night went down…
On the eve of the Kentucky Derby 138, I was cast into the constellation of stars– know simply as, The Julep. Celebrities and the who’s who of Louisville joined in an evening in support of the James Graham Brown Cancer Center. The Galt House was filled with love, laughter and of course, great fashion as guests filed in to party with a purpose. But before anyone could enter the grand ballroom, they had to first pass me. Dressed Behavior took this opportunity to style stalk and loved what we saw! We welcomed them graciously into Wardrobe’s Winners Circle.
First up was Louisville’s Football Savior, Charlie Strong. He wore a simple black tux, but was amazingly accessorized by his lovely wife — in a monochromatic, fuscha look by designer, Nicole Miller. The couple was a class act.
Following behind, the Kentucky Derby Princess sparkled and shimmered their way down the red carpet in an assortment of colors. They weren’t shy as all five posed and worked the cameras like professionals. And keeping it in the family of royalty–Miss Kentucky herself, Lee Ann Herring-Olvedo stopped and chatted about her look by designer Zahahd Shokhi. I’ll admit, it was a daring choice, but beautiful nonetheless. She shared that she opted for something that was more modern and not as “pageant like.” When asked about her standard go-to look, Jessica shared that she loves “day to evening looks that can be transformed with a simple adding or subtracting of a piece.”

I was particularly pleased with the gentleman. All classic in black tie, but some with a twist. Actor Jonathan Kite wore an ivory dinner jacket with a pink shirt in his support of breast cancer. While Project Runway designer, Christian Siriano dressed his look down. He revealed that he never likes to work to hard on his looks. He simply throws on what he loves! However, he admires the look of 70′s rock stars like Jagger.

Another favorite of mine were actors David Arquette, Vanessa Bell- Calloway and attorney turned television personality, Star Jones. All who shared on commonality — they had no clue as to who they were wearing. Ms. Jones shared that her techni-colored dream dress was a Paris original, although the name on the designer escaped her. When asked about her go-to style, she explained that she “wasn’t into fashion,” she wears clothes that reflect how she’s currently feeling. I expressed that she was OBVIOUSLY felling sexy when she got dressed! Given the low neck line, even lower back and above knee length of the cocktail dress.

I asked Star’s best friend, Mrs. Bell-Calloway, to turn around as I looked at her tags to reveal that she also wore a design by Nicole Miller.

While Arquette searched his tags as well, unable to say for certain who’s name was etched on the label. However, it was a classic, black 3 piece, slim fit suit — completely flattering to his slender build.

Needless to say, the event was a success. Good food, good music and good fashion. Thank you Julep — mission complete!

Wardrobe’s Winners Circle

The first weekend in May will transform the city of Louisville into a fashion mecca. Once again, all eyes will be on us. The stars – and during Derby, we’re all stars, aren’t we? – will align to model a plethora of seersuckers, linen, fascinators and other toppers, making for a glamorous Churchill Downs and stunning chic at the various galas.

Chunked and Stacked

Chunked and stacked are two words you MUST add to your vocabulary for Spring/Summer 12 — and we’re not talking Waffle House. This season offers a fashion flashback straight from 70′s disco glam, and it is as hot as ever.

With an added drama of their own, chunky heels are a perfect accent for cropped pants and flirty frocks. They immediately elongate the leg — the taller, the better.

Women say these alternatives last longer since smaller heels are often damaged by cracks and dirt. Chunky heels are also much safer to get around in, finding yourself freed from the dreaded, stiletto ankle twist — not to mention, they just look so [EXPLETIVE] good!

Trend Report: Dinner Jackets

Okay, that was a poor attempt to spin the James Bond original. However, celebs are appearing EVERYWHERE with this modern spin on a classic look.

Dressed Behavior takes a look at Dinner Jackets…
Dinner Jackets first came into fashion during the Victorian era. They were used as a less formal alternative for the tailcoat. We do however, think its safe to say that Mr. Bond popularized the look.

Believe it or not, this look is not hard to find. There are actually a few options. If seeking to wear formally — there is always the option of renting. One can do so from any local tuxedo rental. However, if your like me – I prefer to own.

I recently wore a dinner jacket for my birthday, towards the end of 2011. Although it was designer, I found it for a VERY reasonable price at a local thrift store. The search was tedious, but the reward was great. Let’s not rule out eBay and department stores as well –as this look gets increasingly more popular.

In the city of Louisville, Derby is the time of year that everyone anxiously anticipates. While big hats and seer sucker are Churchill staples, try this look for evening events and formal outings. Dinner jackets are sure to add that level of sophistication and stand out ability to your black tie needs. And ladies, this look isn’t just for the fellas…

The BLOCK Is Hot

Pairing contrasting, yet complimentary, strategically placed bold hues is what this trend is all about. It can be done with two or a multitude of combinations. Block out your inhibitions — color is back!

Color Blocking appeared at international fashion weeks in the Spring of 2011. While this trend is not so new, it has seemingly made way as one of the season’s hottest trends. Prada and others featured this bold look in their collections and caused heads to turn. Celebs (or their stylists) have taken hold of the trend and added their own personal flare — as you are encouraged to do.

Color Blocking can indeed be confusing. If you don’t want to take great thought on this trend when getting dressed, purchase pieces that have already done the thinking for you. Wear one of these stand outs and you can go easy on the rest of your ensemble.

Calling All Colors

Calling ALL colors to the forefront, as this 80′s trend quickly reemerges and dominates your Spring/Summer seasons. Celebs all over have embraced this stand out style — and Dressed Behavior encourages you, dear reader, to do the same.

Colored pants (jeans specifically) have become this season’s staple. They can be found just about EVERYWHERE! From high end to bargain, colored jeans refuse to fade. Opt out of the traditional washes and take a spin on the color wheel until you reach the jackpot!

Here’s the trick when attempting to wear colored pants — offset these bright bottoms with neutral pieces like Kim Kardashian and Kayne West. Neon is one trend that has not tired from Spring/Summer collections. This bright bunch of colors were spotted all over runways during New York Fashion Week.

This look is not tricky to wear, but lets get it right. Accessories (belts, bags, polish, shoes) are the best options. However, choosing to wear neon clothing can be a very chic fashion statement. Kim Kardashian is style stalked wearing neon in the shade of green. She balances her look by pairing a plum hued, platform sandal. Singer, Solange Knowles doubles up on this trend with both green and pink. Lastly, Actress Sarah Jessica Parker shows that less is more. She accents her neutral ensemble with a bold neon pink.
